Rebreather Diver Training and Cross-Overs with DIVE Northampton
For many years, diving has been split into 4 main areas. These were:
- Recreational SCUBA diving (Rec) - the stuff we do for fun and on holiday. No more than 40 metres
- Technical SCUBA & Rebreather diving (Tec) - decompression diving and / or deeper than 40 metres
- Commercial diving - the odd stuff involving strange helmets, diving bells and diving at work
- Military diving - we're not even allowed to ask...
Historically, rebreathers used to be reserved for divers with a compulsion to dive deeper and longer. Because a rebreather uses far less gas than open circuit equipment, divers were able to minimise the cost of expensive Helium in trimix fills and extend their range. These rebreathers were very complex and relied very heavily on the skill, experience and focus of the diver. In more recent times manufacturers, led by Poseidon, have developed what are known as eCCRs. These Electronic Closed Circuit Rebreathers incorporate extensive safety systems that allow divers to operate them at recreational levels and then progress, if they wish to, to more technical CCR diving. It has reached the stage where anyone can dive on a rebreather and get close the aquatic world.
